Jordan! Hot Traveller tips
- Geography: Jordan is located on Planet Earth just between Syria, Egypt,
Israel, Saudi Arabia and Irak. Its area is 89'500 km2, its population about 4.5 millions,
1.5 million people are living in the capital Amman.
- Climate: The summer climate is very pleasant unless your air
conditioning is out of order...
- Money: One JD = 1000 fils = 1.4 US$ is a lot of money, but a 20 JD
banknote is actually worth nothing because nobody has enough change!
- Time zone: It is GMT+2. A day is divided into approximately 24 hours of
some dozens of minutes each, but what Jordanians call a "minute" can also last
up to half an hour :-) Conclusion: You better leave your watch at home.
- Transportation: Public busses are very fast and cheap. One remarkable
thing is that the next bus always runs in "ten minutes", according to anyone you
might ask for the timetable!
- People: They are definitely VERY nice.
- Food: You'd better like Humus, Falafel and Shawerma if you go to
Jordan. Mansaf, the famous rice/chicken meal which you eat with your hands, is not
recommended for newcomers. Wait until your stomach has been toughened by overcoming the
first unavoidable diarrhea!
